It provides a lot of information that you can use on your website, online advertising and Google Places.  It is simple to use.  Just type in a couple words that you think people would use in describing your product or service and Google will show you how many people searched for that term.  It will also show you all the other terms people used and you can download the results in an Excel file.  The file will list Global results, which are how many people across the world searched for the word and a local results, which is the United States.  It also gives you a breakdown by month which allows you to see trends.

So how could you use this information?

If you are writing copy for your website you would want to include the terms that have the greatest search traffic.  This would apply to your Google Places listing also.  If you were running an ad and using Google  Adwords then this information provides a good starting point.

Creating multiple streams of leads with Google Places

One of the smartest business people in my opinion is Jay Abraham.  One of the things he says business must do to prosper is to create multiple streams of revenue.  In this series I’m going to talk about the advantages of Google Places.  There are two  opportunities available with Google Places.

  • First set up your company on Google Places.  This will give you a new source of leads month after month at very little cost.
  • Second you can create a new revenue stream by selling a listing service for companies interested in setting up their Google Places page.

What is Google Places? Think of it as an online Yellow Page directory.  The Yellow Pages actually has an online directory that they charge companies to list their business.  The good thing is they do all the work for you.  The bad is they charge hundreds to thousands of dollars a month and they get approximately 7% of the traffic.  Google’s listing is free and they get about 72% of the traffic.  For the money Google is a much better deal.

In the posts that follow I’ll explain how to set up your Google Places page.  If you set up your Google Places page your business will receive new leads.  If you decide to start selling Google Places you will be able to contact new customers with a service that they probably do not know about, but which can have a profound impact on their business.

I’ve also written a ebook called “Making Google Places work for you.  A step by step plan to getting more customers”.  For a limited time you can receive it free by filling out the form to the right.

Setting up your Places page part 1

Most likely Google has already created a “Places” listing for your company.  All you need to do is claim the listing and update it.  Before I take you through the steps on how to claim your listing I want to tell you why you should take the time to claim or set up your listing.

  1. It is FREE.  Google gets a lot more traffic than the Yellow Pages and if you are advertising with them you know it’s not cheap so why not spend 20 minutes and claim your listing?
  2. Google Places is trackable.  What this means is that you can log into your account and see how many people have visited your Places page, where they came from as well as other information.
  3. You can add pictures, videos and coupons to your Places page.  The pictures and videos give your potential customers a feel for your business and the coupons are something that you can track.  Videos can consist of activities, product demonstrations, or testimonials.  If you need help creating a video, give me a call.  We work with a lot of talented people who can help you create a video at a very reasonable price.
  4. It will drive traffic to your business.  If you are a business to consumer, it could drive a lot of traffic; but even if you sell business to business, you will see an increase in new prospects.

So how do you set up or claim your Google Places account?

  1. Go to Google and type in your company’s name and city and state.  You will get a listing that looks like this.  If you do not that means that Google has not created a listing for your company so you will need to go to Google Places and register your business.
  2. Setting up your Places page part 1

Now click on the “More information link” and you will be taken to this page.

Setting up your Places page part 1

There is a link on the top right that says “business owner?” or “Claim this listing”.  Click on that button and you can update your listing.

There are two ways to verify your listing.  The first is by phone, which may not be available if this is the first listing that you have claimed.  The second is by postcard.  Both serve to verify that you are in fact the owner of the business.  If you click by phone have a pen and a piece of paper handy.  Google will call your phone number within seconds and give you a code that you need to put in to complete the registration process.

Make your Google Places stand out

You should have claimed your Google Places listing, received your verification postcard in the mail, and entered in the code so your listing is now active.  Time to check your listing and see how you are doing.  The first step is to go to Google and type in your company name, city and state.  What listing is showing up?  We’ll assume that your updated listing is now showing up.  If not give, it another week and check again.

If your new information is showing up it’s now time to check your ranking.  Go to Google and type in a search term or category that you listed.  The results should look like this.

Make your Google Places stand out

If you are not showing up on the front page there are steps that you can take to show up.

  • First check the listings above you and see how they are doing.  Have they claimed their listing? Do they have reviews? How many different sources is Google pulling from to create their listing?
  • Armed with that information, you can take steps to improve your listing.  One of the most important is customer reviews.  Ask your customers to review your business.  They can go to your Google Places listing and write a review.
